Blue Origin has announced plans to build a massive satellite internet network. The rocket company belongs to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Blue Origin said it will launch over 5,400 satellites into orbit. The project marks a significant expansion of the company’s space ambitions. The network aims to provide continuous internet access worldwide.
TeraWave Promises High-Speed Global Connectivity
The company named the satellite system TeraWave. Blue Origin said it will deliver uninterrupted internet access across the globe. The network will also move enormous volumes of data at very high speeds. The company said TeraWave will outperform existing commercial satellite services. Even after deploying thousands of satellites, the system will remain smaller than Starlink’s constellation.
Starlink Remains Market Leader
Starlink continues to dominate the satellite internet industry. The network operates under Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Starlink provides internet and phone services directly to individual customers. Blue Origin said TeraWave will not focus on private consumers. The company will serve data centres, businesses, and government clients instead.
TeraWave’s Speed Sets It Apart
Blue Origin said TeraWave will reach upload and download speeds of up to six terabits per second. The company said rival satellite networks cannot match this performance. Several major companies already compete in this sector. Amazon is among the strongest competitors. Bezos remains Amazon’s executive chairman after stepping down as chief executive in 2021.
Amazon Expands Leo Satellite Network
Amazon runs its own satellite project called Leo. The company currently has about 180 satellites in orbit. It launched dozens of additional satellites just last week. Amazon plans to grow the network to more than 3,000 satellites. Leo focuses on providing internet to the general public. Amazon promotes it as a solution for global high-speed connectivity. The company has not announced a full deployment timeline.
Launch Schedule and Recent Achievements
Blue Origin said it will begin launching TeraWave satellites by the end of 2027. The company has recently reached several technical milestones. In November, it successfully landed a rocket booster on a floating platform. Only SpaceX had previously completed this type of landing.
Celebrity Spaceflight Sparks Debate
In April, Blue Origin launched an 11-minute space flight with an all-female crew. Passengers included Lauren Sánchez, Katy Perry, and Gayle King. The flight attracted global attention. Some commentators criticised the mission as tone-deaf. They said the trip appeared insensitive during economic struggles.
