Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Vladimir Putin’s invitation to meet in Moscow, calling it unrealistic and insincere. He told ABC News that he could not visit “the capital of this terrorist” while Ukraine suffers daily missile strikes. Zelenskyy instead invited Putin to travel to Kyiv for direct discussions.
Disputes Over Negotiation Conditions
Former US President Donald Trump pushed for direct talks between the two leaders, making it a key goal of his Alaska summit with Putin. Trump later claimed the meeting would follow Zelenskyy’s Washington visit and talks with European leaders. Moscow, however, added new conditions and escalated shelling of Ukrainian cities, delaying any progress. Putin recently said he was ready to meet but only in Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov insisted the invitation aimed “to talk, not to capitulate.” Speaking in Paris, Zelenskyy replied that such a proposal only proved Russia’s lack of genuine interest in peace.
Ukraine Demands Stronger International Response
Zelenskyy revealed on social media that Russia launched more than 1,300 drones, 900 guided bombs, and 50 missiles in early September. He confirmed the strikes targeted 14 regions across Ukraine. He accused Russia of prolonging the war and turning diplomacy into “a blatant farce.” Zelenskyy urged Ukraine’s allies to strengthen sanctions, boost arms deliveries, and impose tougher restrictions on Russian oil and gas exports.
