Trump’s Foreign Policy Replaced Values With Business Deals

Donald Trump’s presidency brought a major change to how the United States handled foreign policy. In the past, U.S. leaders often spoke about democracy, human rights, and global peace. These ideas were used to justify actions, even when they served American power and economic goals. Under Trump, those messages took a back seat. His government focused less on values and more on what each country could offer in return for American support.

During his time in office, Trump made it clear that the U.S. was no longer in the business of giving advice on how other countries should behave. Instead, his message was simple: if you want help or support from the U.S., you need to give something in return. That might be a defense contract, trade deals, or alignment on strategic goals. This new approach was open and direct, without the usual focus on values like freedom and justice.

One of the clearest examples of this change was Trump’s 2017 visit to Saudi Arabia. During that trip, he announced huge arms deals worth over $100 billion. He did not mention human rights, freedom of the press, or political reform. Instead, he praised Saudi leaders for their strong leadership and focused on fighting terrorism and Iran. In meetings with leaders from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, the topics remained business, defense, and regional security. There was no pressure for those governments to change their internal policies.

Many countries in the Middle East welcomed this shift. They no longer had to worry about being judged by the U.S. on their human rights records or how they ran their countries. Instead, they were treated as business partners. For them, this approach made it easier to build closer ties with Washington without making internal changes.

But there were exceptions. One case that drew attention was Trump’s meeting with the President of South Africa. During that meeting, Trump showed videos that claimed white farmers were being targeted in South Africa. These videos suggested that a form of violence or so-called genocide was happening. The claim was widely criticized and lacked strong evidence. It stood out because it brought a moral message into a policy that otherwise avoided such topics.

This unusual moment aside, Trump’s foreign policy remained focused on immediate benefits. His administration believed that if the U.S. was going to spend money or take risks, it had to get something valuable in return. This view influenced relations with countries across the globe—from Europe to Asia to Africa.

In Europe, some long-time allies were uncomfortable with the change. They were used to hearing the U.S. speak about shared values and global leadership. Now they were being told to increase defense spending or buy American products if they wanted to keep U.S. support. Some leaders felt this put pressure on their budgets and relationships with voters.

In Asia, the picture was mixed. Countries like Japan and South Korea managed to maintain good ties by offering defense cooperation and trade deals. Others, like China, faced growing tension, especially over trade. Trump launched a trade war with China, placing tariffs on many Chinese goods and demanding better terms for the U.S. These actions were consistent with his transactional style—getting more for America in every deal.

Even after Trump left office, some parts of his foreign policy remained. The idea that countries must offer value to gain U.S. support has not disappeared. Future leaders may still follow this path, especially in times of economic stress or security threats. While the tone may change, the basic idea—that every relationship should bring clear benefits—continues to influence American diplomacy.

Trump’s foreign policy may have ended the age of moral messaging in U.S. international relations. What he left behind was a new way of thinking: if a country wants help, it must give something in return. This change continues to shape the world today.
