Street Haven, a renowned not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting women experiencing homelessness, is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary with a grand gala at Galleria Italia, Art Gallery of Ontario on March 25, 2025. The milestone event will not only honor six decades of transformative service but also unveil plans for the Women’s Healthy Housing Campus, an initiative aimed at tripling the organization’s affordable housing capacity in downtown Toronto.
“This event is important because it highlights the significant achievements and impact that Street Haven has had on society and homeless women,” said Dr. Siu Mee Cheng, Executive Director of Street Haven. “We have played a critical role in ending homelessness for tens of thousands of women, and this milestone allows us to celebrate our past while shaping our future.”
A Legacy of Innovation and Impact
Founded in 1965 by Peggy Ann Walpole, a Governor General Award-winning nurse, Street Haven has pioneered services for homeless women in Canada. It was the first organization in the country to establish a women’s shelter and a women’s residential addiction treatment program. Over the past 60 years, Street Haven has expanded its services to include mental health counseling, trauma support, employment training, and long-term housing solutions.
The gala will bring together key stakeholders, community leaders, supporters, and both past and present clients to celebrate the organization’s grassroots history and continued evolution. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore a curated exhibit featuring archival records, memorabilia, and powerful success stories from women who have benefited from Street Haven’s programs.
High-Profile Attendees and Special Events
The event will be inaugurated with remarks from Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, Councillor Chris Moise, and MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam, who will recognize Street Haven’s contributions to the city. A silent auction will also take place, featuring artwork donated by clients, with all proceeds supporting Street Haven’s future initiatives.
The Future: Women’s Healthy Housing Campus
Looking ahead, Street Haven is focused on expanding its affordable housing footprint. The newly announced Women’s Healthy Housing Campus in downtown Toronto will provide safe, affordable, and supportive housing for women in need, addressing the city’s growing homelessness crisis.
“Homelessness remains a pressing issue in Toronto,” said Dr. Cheng. “Our goal is to create more sustainable housing solutions that empower women to regain stability and independence.”
A Commitment to Ending Homelessness
Street Haven’s 60-year journey has been marked by unwavering dedication to ending homelessness among women. Through shelter services, addiction recovery programs, and employment support, the organization continues to lead the way in providing a pathway to stability for vulnerable women.
