William Smith College junior Natalie Daniels has been honored as USA Lacrosse Magazine’s Division III Women’s Player of the Week, following her explosive performance against Ithaca College. The announcement was made earlier this week after Daniels delivered a career-matching seven-point game, helping the Herons secure a decisive 17-5 victory on April 8.
Daniels, who plays midfield, scored six goals and provided one assist in the game, tying her personal best of seven points. She also took control of the field with 14 draw controls, fueling a second-quarter surge that turned a tight 3-3 tie into a commanding lead.
“Natalie’s energy on the field sets the tone for the whole team,” said Head Coach Anne Phillips. “She leads by example and pushes us forward when the game gets intense.”
Dominant Second Quarter Sparks Big Win
In the early stages of the game, the Herons and Bombers were locked in a close battle. But as the second quarter began, Daniels took charge. She played a central role in a 14-2 run that broke the game wide open. Her natural hat trick in the second half helped seal the deal, pushing the Herons to their ninth win of the season.
The win improved William Smith’s record to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in the Liberty League, keeping them on top of the standings as the playoffs approach.
Daniels’ leadership and skill were on full display. Her six goals were scored in a variety of ways—some on fast breaks, others from tight angles—demonstrating her range and ability to adapt to different defensive setups.
Record-Breaking Season Continues
Daniels’ performance against Ithaca is just the latest chapter in what has been a remarkable season. Through nine games, she has scored 27 goals and recorded seven assists, totaling 34 points. She leads the Herons with 90 draw controls, a critical stat that shows her impact on possession and momentum.
Across all Division III programs in the nation, Daniels ranks fourth in draw controls per game, averaging 10 per contest.
She’s also climbing the record books at William Smith. Daniels now has 305 career draw controls, putting her just 13 shy of the all-time school record of 318 held by former standout Maddie Montgomery.
Last season, Daniels set the program’s single-season draw control record with 128. She broke the single-game draw control record earlier this year, pulling down 15 in the season opener against SUNY Geneseo.“Natalie’s consistency is what makes her special,” said Assistant Coach Rachel Moyer. “She’s not just a one-game wonder. She shows up every day and performs.”
A History of Top Performances
Daniels owns the top five single-game draw control records in William Smith history. Her 14 draw controls against Ithaca tied her previous second-best mark set against Skidmore on March 29. She also grabbed 13 draws in last year’s NCAA tournament wins over Gettysburg and MIT.
Her performance has made her not only a local hero but also a nationally recognized name in women’s Division III lacrosse.
Looking Ahead
As William Smith heads into the final stretch of the regular season, Daniels is expected to play a key role in the team’s playoff push. With several more games on the schedule, she has the opportunity to break the career draw control record and help lead the Herons to a deep postseason run.
The team’s next game is scheduled for this Saturday against Vassar College. A strong showing there could further solidify Daniels’ status as one of the best players in the nation.
