NASA astronauts Sunita “Suni” Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore have officially begun their return journey to Earth after an extended stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Their homecoming was delayed for several months, but early Tuesday, they boarded a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and commenced their 17-hour trip toward a splashdown off the coast of Florida.
Joining them on the return mission are NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov. The spacecraft undocked from the ISS at approximately 1:05 a.m. ET, marking the beginning of its carefully planned descent back to Earth.
Extended Stay in Space
Williams and Wilmore initially traveled to the ISS in June 2024 aboard Boeing’s Starliner capsule, conducting its first astronaut-crewed mission. The original plan was for them to stay on the ISS for about a week. However, technical and logistical challenges led to an unexpected nine-month extension of their stay in space.
Their prolonged mission provided valuable insights into the performance of the Starliner spacecraft in long-duration spaceflight conditions. NASA and Boeing engineers monitored the spacecraft’s systems throughout the mission, ensuring its safety and reliability for future human spaceflight operations.
Return Journey and Landing Plans
Following undocking, the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft performed a series of orbital maneuvers, positioning itself above and behind the ISS before initiating a sequence of departure burns. These controlled thruster firings adjusted the spacecraft’s trajectory, guiding it toward Earth’s atmosphere.
The journey back involves several key phases, including atmospheric reentry, parachute deployment, and an ocean splashdown. NASA officials have designated a safe landing zone off Florida’s coast, where recovery teams are on standby to retrieve the astronauts and the spacecraft.
