Meta, the parent of Facebook and Instagram, is eliminating 600 positions in its artificial intelligence division, US media reported. The company confirmed on Wednesday that it will cut around 600 AI jobs while continuing to recruit staff for its superintelligence lab.
FAIR Unit Faces Major Job Cuts
Axios revealed that the layoffs will hit Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) unit, along with teams managing AI products and infrastructure. The company’s newer TBD Lab will stay intact. According to a memo from chief AI officer Alexandr Wang, Meta is urging displaced workers to seek other positions within the company, and most should secure new roles.
Wang wrote that reducing team size will simplify decision-making and increase each employee’s responsibility and influence. Meta continues to recruit for TBD Lab, which builds the company’s latest large language models (LLMs). These models power systems such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s Llama.
Meta Expands AI Access Despite Setbacks
Unlike competitors, Meta offers its flagship Llama model as a semi–open source product that allows users to access and adapt parts of its system. The company claims that over one billion people use its AI tools monthly. However, many analysts still view Meta as trailing behind OpenAI and Google in promoting everyday use of large language models.
