French wildlife photographer Lucas Cottereau snapped the surreal images during a recent expedition in the Everglades, a sprawling subtropical wilderness teeming with diverse life. The images show the large gator seemingly unbothered by its devastating injury as it moves through its natural habitat.
The alligator, identified as a wild Alligator mississippiensis, appears to have lost its upper jaw entirely, likely due to a brutal territorial fight or a run-in with a boat propeller. Despite this severe disfigurement, the reptile has remarkably adapted to survive—an incredible testament to the raw resilience that defines life in the wild.
“Nature can be absolutely ruthless,” Cottereau shared on social media, along with the haunting images. “But even in the most extreme adversity, survival is still possible.”
