Recovery Follows Years of Market Volatility
After a period of disruption and declining sales, Europe’s automotive market is showing renewed stability. According to figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), car registrations across the European Union have remained largely unchanged in 2025, signaling a halt to previous downturns. The recovery has been underpinned by improved supply chains, more stable energy costs, and steady consumer interest. Electric vehicles continue to drive growth, now accounting for roughly 20% of new car purchases, thanks to government incentives and the rapid buildout of charging infrastructure in key countries such as Germany and France.
Chinese Brands Push Further Into Europe
Even as the European market steadies, Chinese automakers are becoming a formidable force across the continent. Companies including BYD, SAIC’s MG, and Geely’s Zeekr have increased shipments and are planning European production sites to lessen the impact of new trade measures. The European Commission imposed tariffs of up to 35% on China-produced electric cars in late 2024, citing evidence of state subsidies that distort competition. Despite these restrictions, Chinese brands are capturing more market share—estimated at around 5%—and are particularly appealing to value-focused buyers and fleet operators seeking lower-cost electric models.
Pressure Builds on Europe’s Legacy Carmakers
For established players such as Volkswagen, Renault, and Stellantis, the return to a steady sales environment has yet to ease financial strains. Heightened competition from Chinese entrants and the ongoing price war in the electric segment have eroded margins and accelerated the need for strategic change. European manufacturers are pressing policymakers to expand support for domestic battery manufacturing and research initiatives to secure the region’s industrial base. Analysts warn that 2026 could be a decisive year as the continent’s automakers work to defend their position in a fast-evolving global electric vehicle landscape.
