Romania has confirmed that a drone intruded into its territory during overnight Russian bombardments of Ukraine, triggering a NATO air response. Poland, facing similar alerts, raised its readiness and launched jets to patrol its skies.
Breach Near Romania’s Border
Military officials in Bucharest reported that the drone crossed roughly 10 kilometers into Romanian airspace before radar contact was lost in the Danube Delta, near Chilia Veche. The craft was flying at low altitude and avoided populated zones.
Romania dispatched two F-16 fighters, supported by Eurofighters deployed under NATO’s air policing mission. Authorities issued warnings across Tulcea County, urging people to remain under cover until the situation was resolved.
The unmanned aircraft eventually turned back toward Ukraine, and no casualties or damage were reported.
Different Versions of Events
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the drone remained in NATO airspace for nearly 50 minutes, calling it a deliberate escalation by Moscow.
Romania’s Defence Minister said pilots had prepared to intercept but held fire after evidence showed the drone was heading out of Romanian territory.
Poland Raises Security Measures
Elsewhere, Poland responded to possible drone movements late Friday by scrambling fighters, closing Lublin airport, and activating air defense units.
Although no drones were confirmed to have entered Polish skies, defense officials said the steps were necessary given the repeated aerial threats linked to Russia’s war on Ukraine.
Ongoing Strain on NATO Borders
Both Romania and Poland have previously reported debris from Russian drones landing on their territory, incidents that have intensified pressure on NATO to strengthen defenses along its eastern frontier.
The alliance confirmed it had been briefed on the latest breach in Romania, stressing there was no immediate danger to civilians. Still, the event underscores the persistent risks facing member states bordering Ukraine.
