Donald Trump is urging the European Union to introduce tariffs of up to 100 percent on China and India. He wants to step up pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and push toward ending the war in Ukraine.
Trump demands tougher line on Russia
The US president made his demand during a meeting with EU officials on Tuesday. Both sides considered new ways to weaken Russia’s economy. According to a source, Trump pushed for the highest possible tariffs against China and India. He had promised to end the conflict on the “first day” of his presidency. But peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv remain frozen. Meanwhile, Russia has intensified its strikes on Ukraine.
Trump prepares to speak with Putin
Trump also revealed on Tuesday that he plans to call Putin soon. He expects the conversation this week or early next week. China and India remain two of the largest importers of Russian oil. Their purchases support Russia’s economy and help fund the war.
Washington already imposed tariffs on India
Last month, the United States introduced tariffs of 50 percent on Indian goods. The move included a 25 percent penalty tied to India’s trade with Russia. The EU has pledged to cut its reliance on Russian energy. Still, almost 19 percent of its natural gas imports come from Moscow. If Brussels accepts Trump’s proposal, it would mark a major change. Europe has until now relied on sanctions rather than tariffs.
Treasury secretary urges stronger European backing
Trump’s demand came after comments by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He said Washington is prepared to ramp up economic pressure. But he stressed that Europe’s stronger support is vital.
Russia escalates attacks across Ukraine
A Russian missile struck Ukraine’s main government building in Kyiv over the weekend. Analysts described the attack as both symbolic and a major escalation. Ukraine reported its heaviest wave of airstrikes since the start of the war. Officials said Russia launched 810 drones and 13 missiles. On Tuesday, more than 20 civilians were killed in Donetsk by a Russian glide bomb. They had been waiting to collect their pensions.
Trump threatens tougher sanctions on Kremlin
Trump said he was “not happy with the whole situation.” He warned Moscow of harsher sanctions. He had made similar threats before, but Putin ignored them. A recent summit in Alaska ended without progress toward peace.
Trade talks with India continue
Trump also confirmed that Washington and New Delhi are still negotiating trade barriers. He plans to call Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming weeks. Trump said he expects a “successful conclusion.” Modi echoed Trump’s optimism and praised their strong ties. “Our teams are working to finalize the talks quickly. I also look forward to speaking with President Trump,” he said.
Signs of renewed partnership with India
Observers view Trump’s remarks as a sign of warming ties after earlier talks collapsed. Just last week, Trump highlighted the “special relationship” with India. “There’s nothing to worry about,” he said. “Sometimes we just have small disagreements.”
