Gen Z travelers have strong opinions about what makes a trip enjoyable—and what instantly ruins the vibe. While older generations may scrutinize how Gen Z behaves while traveling, new research shows that Gen Z also has a long list of travel “icks” when it comes to fellow tourists. From dramatic airport goodbyes to passport covers, certain habits are officially out of style for the younger generation of globetrotters.

A study conducted by hospitality group Generator reveals that Gen Z travelers prioritize authenticity and cultural awareness, often frowning upon behaviors that they deem outdated or cringe-worthy. Here’s a closer look at the biggest travel icks for Gen Z—and how you can avoid them on your next trip.

Filming TikToks and Instagram Reels in Public

Surprisingly, the number one travel ick for Gen Z is something they’re often associated with—filming content for social media. According to the research, one in four Gen Z travelers (25%) find it annoying when people record TikToks or Instagram videos in public spaces. While social media plays a major role in how Gen Z documents their travels, there’s evidently a divide within the generation regarding when and where it’s appropriate to film.

Culturally Inappropriate Clothing

Tied for the top spot, another major travel faux pas for Gen Z is wearing culturally inappropriate clothing. Approximately 26% of survey respondents expressed discomfort with tourists who disregard local dress codes or wear outfits that could be considered disrespectful. This highlights a growing trend of cultural awareness among younger travelers who seek to blend in rather than stand out.

Overly Dramatic Airport Goodbyes

If you’re planning to recreate a Love Actually-style airport farewell, think again. Nearly one in five Gen Z travelers (19%) say they find dramatic airport send-offs to be an ick. Unlike older generations, who might appreciate the emotional significance of a long goodbye, Gen Z seems to prefer a more low-key and efficient approach to parting ways.

Passport Covers and Tourist Merchandise

According to the research, passport covers are officially considered “cheugy” (outdated and unfashionable) by Gen Z travelers. The once-popular travel accessory has lost its appeal, as younger tourists opt for a more minimalist approach.

Similarly, 15% of Gen Z respondents said they dislike wearing tourist merchandise, such as city-branded T-shirts or hats. Even buying souvenirs isn’t as popular among this demographic, with only 6% showing interest in bringing memorabilia home from their travels.

Queuing for the Plane

One of the more divisive travel habits—lining up for boarding before necessary—has also made the list. Nearly 10% of Gen Z travelers report finding this habit annoying. Many young travelers prefer a more relaxed approach, waiting comfortably rather than rushing to stand in line.

Over-Sharing on Social Media and Duolingo Streaks

Beyond public filming, Gen Z travelers also dislike excessive documentation of trips. About 12% of respondents shared that constantly posting on social media throughout an entire vacation is an ick. Instead, they prefer to stay present and engage with their surroundings rather than curate an online travel diary.

Even language-learning habits are under scrutiny—8% of Gen Z travelers find using Duolingo while on vacation to be cringeworthy. While the language-learning app is popular, the idea of tourists obsessively maintaining their streaks while traveling seems to rub some Gen Zers the wrong way.

The Shift Towards Authentic Travel Experiences

Annajane Güzel, Global Director of Brand Marketing at Generator, explained the significance of these findings: “This research shows that Gen Z travelers are rewriting the rules of tourism, favoring authenticity over outdated travel clichés. From skipping the dramatic airport send-offs to steering clear of head-to-toe tourist gear, it’s all about embracing the destination in a more thoughtful and effortless way. The message is clear: blend in, travel smart, and leave the obvious ‘tourist’ moves behind.”

As Gen Z continues to shape travel trends, their emphasis on cultural sensitivity, social awareness, and personal authenticity is evident. For those looking to avoid being labeled as an “icky” traveler, the key is simple: respect the local culture, minimize disruptive habits, and embrace a more seamless, natural approach to exploring new destinations.
